Analysis of Unsaturation Performance of IEEE 802.11 DCF with and without Slow Contention Window Decrease

چکیده
Most of analytical models proposed so far for the IEEE 802.11 distributed coordination function (DCF) focus on saturation performance. In this paper, we develop an analytic model for unsaturation performance evaluation of the IEEE 802.11 DCF with and without slow contention window decrease (SCWD). The model explicitly takes into account the carrier sensing mechanism and an additional backoff interval after successful frame transmission, both of which can be ignored under saturation conditions. Expressions are derived for throughput and delay characteristics by means of the equilibrium point analysis. The accuracy of our model is validated through computer simulation. Numerical results based on the IEEE 802.11b with CCK show that the SCWD can stably achieve approximately 20% performance gain over the normal 802.11 DCF under unsaturation conditions as well as saturation ones. key words: IEEE 802.11 DCF, backoff algorithm, equilibrium point analysis, throughput, transmission delay

Performance Evaluation of Binary Negative-Exponential Backoff Algorithm in IEEE 802.11 WLAN
IEEE 802.11 has employed distributed coordination function (DCF) adopting carrier sense multiple access with collision avoidance (CSMA/CA). To effectively resolve collisions, DCF uses binary exponential backoff (BEB) algorithm with three parameters, i.e., backoff stage, backoff counter and contention window. If a collision occurs, stations involving in the collision increase their backoff stage...

In recent years, wireless ad hoc networks have become increasingly popular in both military and civilian applications due to its capability of building networks without the need for a pre-existing infrastructure. While a number of studies have been carried out to study the performance of IEEE 802.11 DCF in single-cell wireless LANs, the analysis of IEEE 802.11 DCF in multi-hop wireless networks...
متن کاملDSCR: A More Stable MAC Protocol for Wireless Networks
Channel capacity is a scarce resource in wireless networks. However, the way in which IEEE 802.11 DCF uses random backoff time to resolve the channel contention leads to inefficient utilization of this scarce resource. In particular, in a highly loaded network, the portion of channel bandwidth wasted due to collisions is significantly high. Prior work proposes various ways to improve the perfor...
